Red Flags to Watch For

Warning signs that a holistic health practitioner may not be operating ethically or within their qualifications.

🚩 They Claim to Cure Diseases

No ethical holistic health practitioner should claim to cure, treat, or diagnose medical conditions unless they hold separate medical licensure. Words like "cure," "treat," or "diagnose" from someone without medical credentials are a major red flag.

Legitimate practitioners talk about supporting wellness, facilitating balance, or complementing medical care—not replacing it.

🚩 They Discourage Conventional Medicine

Run from any practitioner who tells you to stop taking prescribed medications, avoid your doctor, or choose their services instead of medical care. Ethical practitioners work alongside conventional medicine, not against it.

If someone tells you to stop taking prescribed medication without consulting your prescribing physician, that's not just a red flag—it's dangerous. Report it immediately.

🚩 They Can't Show Credentials

If a practitioner is evasive about their training, credentials, or professional memberships, that's a warning sign. Legitimate practitioners are proud of their qualifications and happy to have them verified.

Ask directly: "What credentials do you hold, and where can I verify them?" If they can't or won't answer clearly, walk away.

🚩 They Pressure You Into Long Commitments

Upfront demands for expensive, long-term packages before you've even had an initial session are a red flag. Ethical practitioners let their work speak for itself.

It's reasonable for a practitioner to recommend a series of sessions. It's not reasonable for them to require payment for 12 sessions before you've met them once.

🚩 They Guarantee Specific Outcomes

Holistic health is individualized. Anyone guaranteeing specific results ("I guarantee you'll lose 30 pounds" or "This will fix your anxiety") is being dishonest. Ethical practitioners discuss possibilities, not guarantees.

Results vary by person, condition, consistency, and many other factors. No one can promise outcomes with certainty.

🚩 They Lack Clear Boundaries

Professional boundaries matter. Watch for:

  • Inappropriate personal questions unrelated to your care
  • Dual relationships (also being your friend/partner's practitioner)
  • Sessions in unprofessional settings (their home, your home without clear reason)
  • Unwanted physical contact or touching beyond what was consented to

If your gut tells you a boundary has been crossed, trust it.

🚩 They're Not Transparent About Fees

You should know exactly what you're paying for before any session. Hidden fees, unclear billing, and refusal to provide receipts are all red flags.

A professional will clearly outline their fees, cancellation policy, and what's included in each session before you book.

🚩 They Isolate You From Support

Any practitioner who discourages you from discussing your care with family, friends, or other healthcare providers is operating from a place of control, not care.

Ethical practitioners encourage you to have a support system and to coordinate care across all your healthcare providers.

See something concerning? You can report it.
